Maine Surfers Union is a surf and surfing lifestyle retail space with an in-house shaping bay to make our own surfboards and your custom board. MSU is the brainchild of Charlie Fox, a lifetime water enthusiast who grew up surfing in the Northeast before moving to California where he experimented with shaping and found a passion for surfboard design.

Wanting to bring that passion back to his home state of Maine, he opened a brick and mortar store in Portland’s Old Port. Located at 15 Free Street, Portland, Maine we offer hand-shaped boards 100% made in the US along with top of the line surf products and men’s and women’s clothing. As one of few surf shops this far North on the East Coast we aim to share the stoke of surfing, which to us is a lifestyle based on an appreciation and respect for the outdoors, the ocean, and fellow surfers.

Charlie Fox

I have been making boards since 2002 and have been constantly trying new shapes and ideas with no plans on slowing down. As owner of Neto Shapes and head shaper for MSU, I get the opportunity to shape a variety of designs for custom orders and shop boards, which gives me the chance to get creative.

As a craftsman and hand-shaper, I enjoy doing the little extras like adding tailblocks, making fins and other woodworking elements that set boards apart from others. Creating boards that make people happy and teaching people how to shape is very rewarding and I am always looking forward to the next project.
